Don't Delay, Last Day to Sign Up for Health Care Coverage

The deadline to apply for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act is today, Monday, March 31st by midnight.

Colorado is a part of 14 other states, plus Washington, D.C. running their own enrollment websites. Coloradans may visit www.connectforhealthco.com for information on how to enroll. People in states not running their own website may visit www.healthcare.gov. Representatives are also available by phone at 1-800-318-2596 to help with enrollment.

Colorado ranks high in enrollments compared to other states that have set up exchanges, but some worry that without enough enrollments, the costs will rise. According to Lindy Hinman, the chief operating officer for Connect for Health Colorado, so far more than 250,000 people have signed up for health insurance through the exchange. More than 150,000 of those are enrolled in the expanded Medicaid program. The remaining 100,000 are signed up for private insurance.

While the number of Medicaid enrollments is slightly above projections, the number of people signing up for private insurance is lower than the target number. Experts say the financial viability of health care reform depends on having a substantial number of people signing up for private insurance, especially healthy young people. Supporters are in the final push to exceed the 6 million target for sign ups. People not signed up through their jobs or on their own are subject to being fined by the Internal Revenue Service. However there is a 60 day extension available if people begin their enrollment and do not finish. Other reasons may be they are missing information or there are errors due to website glitches. The rules may vary in states running their own insurance marketplaces. To seek a special enrollment period, contact the federal call center, at 1-855-889-4325, or the state marketplace and explain what happened.
