Sawaya Value Award December FAMILY winner Rebecca Vahle
Rebecca Vahle founded the Family to Family Adoption Support program at Parker Adventist Hospital, the only hospital-based adoption support program in the country. When the Vahles adopted their first child, Brianna, they were embraced by an understanding and supportive hospital staff. However with their second child, Joe, they were at a different hospital and felt ignored by the staff. These very different experiences inspired Rebecca to create the Family to Family Adoption Support program at Parker Adventist Hospital.
The mission of the program is to create a sensitive and caring experience for both birth parents and adopting parents. The program seeks to combine expert medical care with the highest levels of compassion and sensitivity. “There is a definite need in our community for classes dedicated solely to adoptive families,” notes Donna Pinson, the director of The BirthPlace at Parker Hospital. “I see first-hand what an inspiration Rebecca is to these families. Together, our goal is to make The BirthPlace a place where all families are embraced, biological and adoptive.” It is Rebecca’s goal to ensure that families who come to Parker Hospital receive the support and education to successfully start a family.
