Information about Viagra and Cialis

Viagra and Cialis are among the class of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors that are prescribed to help men dealing with male impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction. The medications work in similar ways. They increase blood flow to the penis and are intended to help men with ED get and keep an erection. They vary in the length of time that they stay in the body.

Viagra (sildenafil citrate) was the first erectile dysfunction drug introduced onto the market after approval by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998. Manufactured by Pfizer, Inc., Viagra tablets may be prescribed in dosage strengths of 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg. The drug is typically taken a half hour to several hours before planned sexual activity.

Cialis, which contains the active ingredient tadalafil, was introduced in 2003 by Eli Lilly and Company as an alternative to Viagra. It is approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction and to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, a common condition in aging men. The condition also is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia. Cialis is available in 10 mg and 20 mg tablets. Cialis has a longer lasting effect than Viagra, but the side effects of Cialis also may be longer lasting.

Erectile Dysfunction Drug Side Effects

The most common side effects of erectile dysfunction drugs are headache, facial flushing and back pain. But erectile dysfunction drugs are associated with some serious side effects as well, including:

  • loss of hearing
  • loss of vision
  • increased risk of melanoma skin cancer.

Some patients taking erectile dysfunction drugs have experienced sudden hearing loss or decrease in hearing, according to the FDA. The hearing loss was temporary in approximately a third of the cases, the FDA said. The hearing loss may be accompanied by vertigo, dizziness or ringing in the ears.

Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes is an uncommon but serious eye problem associated with taking Viagra and Cialis. The condition is known as non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy. More common vision side effects include blurred vision or changes in color perception.

Studies have linked Viagra to melanoma, a potentially lethal type of skin cancer. A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine found that men who used Viagra were at an increased risk of being diagnosed with melanoma cancer over a period of 10 years.

Both Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, and Eli Lilly and Company, the manufacturer of Cialis, face dangerous drug lawsuits from more than 100 men who allege that they developed melanoma as a result of taking their brand of erectile dysfunction medication. The lawsuits, filed in federal court, allege that they failed to adequately warn consumers of the dangers posed by the erectile dysfunction drugs. More than 200 lawsuits have been consolidated as a multidistrict litigation in the U.S. District Court for the North District of California to handle the pre-trial phase of the litigation more efficiently.

Erectile dysfunction drugs also may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure to an unsafe level if taken with certain other medications.  Erectile dysfunction medication should not be taken if you are taking medicines called nitrates prescribed to treat angina, or with guanylate cyclase stimulators, which are used to treat high blood pressure.

Who is Eligible to File a Lawsuit?

If you or your loved one has been prescribed Viagra or Cialis and then been diagnosed with melanoma cancer, vision problems or hearing loss, you may be entitled to seek compensation from the drug manufacturer for your injuries.

Drug makers are required by law to make and market products that are safe and effective and to warn of known risks of taking the drugs. When they fail to do so, they should be held accountable for the harm caused by dangerous drugs.
