The FDA’s Actions

In January 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed Johnson & Johnson and other large drug manufacturers that they had to limit acetaminophen doses to 325 milligrams for all prescription medications. Drug makers were also ordered to include the most severe drug warnings on all prescriptions containing acetaminophen. Some popular prescription drugs such as Vicodin and Hydrocodone contain 400 to 750 milligrams of acetaminophen.

Standard over-the-counter Tylenol has 200 to 500 milligrams (extra strength Tylenol) in each tablet or capsule. People often pop two or three capsules at a time, several times a day – quickly adding up to dosages in the danger zone.
