Social Security Disability Benefits for Veterans

October 30, 2008 by The Sawaya Law Firm

There is an expedited process for Social Security Disability claims for military service members who became disabled while on active military duty on or after October 1, 2001. It does not matter in what country the injury occurred. If Social Security can determine from Department of Defense that the applicant’s claimed disability occurred in service during that time period, then the applicant will be given priority through the Social Security process. A service member may apply for benefits online at www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors, or by telephone or at your local Social Security office. A service member who was injured during active military service should also apply for disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs at their local VA regional office or online at www.va.gov.
