Serving Our Veterans

March 21, 2014 by The Sawaya Law Firm

Veterans fought for the liberties we all enjoy. Starting on March 17, 2014, veterans who have a VA compensation rating of 100% permanent and total may receive expedited processing of applications for Social Security disability benefits. Both Social Security and VA pay disability benefits. If you receive VA compensation, it will not affect Social Security benefits. Please visit the Social Security website to learn how to apply: //www.ssa.gov/pgm/disability-pt.htm.

The Sawaya Law Firm takes great pride in representing clients for Social Security Disability benefits for Veterans. Offering legal representation is only a part of honoring their work. Currently, many stores on military bases are either closed down or have shrinking inventories due to the drawdown. Many organizations facilitate sending monetary contributions or care packages to soldiers on duty. As a part of giving back, we sent care packages to Afghanistan through www.adopt-a-chaplain.org. Recognizing their work is important on all levels.

This week on March 18, 2014, President Obama also honored twenty-four veterans with the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor, for their valor during their combat operations in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After a review of their records, the all received an upgrade from the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second highest military award to ensure they were not denied or overlooked because of prejudice.

Among them, Colorado native, Corporal Joe R. Baldonado received the award for his courageous actions while serving as an acting machine gunner in 3d Squad, 2d Platoon, Company B, 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment during combat operations against an armed enemy in Kangdong, Korea on November 25, 1950.
