There were several severe tornadoes that hit Dallas, Texas this past week with devastating results. Growing up in Dallas this was a frequent occurrence, especially during the spring and summer. A tornado always brought heaps of rain, hail, and of course, strong wind. I ended up moving to Boulder, Colorado after I graduated from high school, and I realized that while Texas might be in tornado alley, even Colorado can be prone to deadly tornadoes. The question that everyone should ask themselves is- do I have insurance coverage to protect my home and all my belongings?
If such a disaster could ever strike your neighborhood then you need to make sure that you have adequate insurance. To do this, look at both your home owner’s policy and your car insurance policy. For your car, make sure you are covered for the potential hail damage that your car can occur, and take a good look at the policy for any possible exclusions that might be listed. Confirm with your insurance agent what is covered and is not covered in your car policy, and ask any questions you may have.
For your home, make sure you have coverage on both the structure and the contents. Do you have insurance that covers wind, hail, and flood damage to your house? Anything can happen in a tornado (even electrical fires and flood damage) and you do not want to be left fighting the insurance company while trying to put your life back together.
