Acting Responsibly Toward Our Clients
We believe that responsibility is at the core of uninsured motorist accident claims. We take responsibility when it comes to making sure a negligent uninsured motorist takes responsibility for his or her actions and insurance companies act responsibly when paying out legitimate claims.
One of our 12 core values, responsibility means being reliable and dependable. “The legal process properly demands that all must be responsible, including insurance companies."
Part of acting responsibly toward our clients is keeping up to date as the laws change regarding uninsured motorist claims. For instance, the Colorado legislature passed a law, effective Jan. 1, 2008, that changed uninsured motorist accident coverage in two important ways:
- An insurance company can no longer "offset" the amount paid by the at-fault driver's insurance company against the amount available under your own UM policy.
- Now, the UM coverage you purchase can "stack" on top of the total amount of insurance available from the at-fault driver. For example, if you buy $100,000 of UM coverage to protect your family, the entire $100,000 will be available to you on top of the insurance available from the at-fault driver, if you need it.
This is important coverage that should not be waived when the option to add it to your policy is offered. Often, insurance companies send policyholders letters asking them to waive the coverage altogether. This is not a good idea under any circumstances, and you should exercise your option to keep this in your policy, add it or increase the amount of coverage.
